Students in Years 1-4 focus on the following subjects: scripture, English language (divided into lessons on writing, spelling, phonics, grammar and handwriting), English literature (reading), mathematics, history, science/geography, music (singing and music appreciation) and art.
The whole school joins together for an assembly, led by a member of the School Board, on a Monday morning. Wednesday and Friday mornings begin with a scripture reading and prayer in the class.
Learning in English grammar, phonics and mathematics is structured around workbooks tailored to the age and ability of each individual student. The class teacher provides instruction and a teaching assistant gives extra help, for example, to pupils still learning to read. Each student also follows an individual reading programme.
Lessons in scripture and English literature are also given by the class teacher and history and science/geography by specialist teachers. Instruction is to the whole class, with activities differentiated according to the age and aptitude of each student.
The whole school joins together for singing and art lessons on a Wednesday afternoon, with children working on a common topic or skill at the level appropriate to each individual.
